Samuel John Carter |
(English, 1835 -1892 ) |
Born in Swaffham, Norfolk, and studied in Norwich, Carter specialised in paintings of dogs and puppies. He rose above the ruck of many Victorian horse-painters despite his frequent employment in turning-out the likenesses of favorite hunters in the stereotyped manner of the day. He painted horses with accuracy and feeling and could display a good sense of composition, producing some excellent equestrian portraits in pleasing settings.
He exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1855 and 1890, as well as the British Institution and at Suffolk Street. His paintings included sporting scenes of stag-hunting. He was particularly successful in painting red deer, one of these subjects being acquired by the Tate Gallery. A presentation picture A September Evening, Badgworthy, was a skillful composition in which he painted both a horse and stag. |
