Rembrandt Bugatti
(Italian, 1884 -1916 )

Born in Milan, Rembrandt was the son of Carlo Bugatti, the furniture designer, and the brother of Ettore, the well-known car and train designer, whose work made the name famous.

Bugatti studied under the sculptor, Prince Paul Troubetzkoy, and one can see the influence of the elder artist in Bugatti's work. Bugatti, who has become more well known and highly collectible, is known for a rather impressionistic use of the medium, creating in loosely rendered sculptural forms, expressive and animated animal portraits.

Bugatti did his first animal bronze in 1901 a the age of sixteen, , exhibiting extensively from 1904 on, when he showed 30 models at the Galerie Hebrard. Like so many nineteenth century animaliers before him, he studied live animals extensively at the Jardin des Plantes in Paris. In 1907 he moved to Antwerp where he continued to study wild animals in captivity.
