Original works of art

Philippe Rousseau
(French, 1816 -1887 )

The Parisian, Philippe Rosseau won a painting scholarship in 1830 and became a student of Gros and of Bertin. He first exhibited at the Salon in 1834 and was awarded medals in 1845 and 1848. While his early work was of landscapes, he later specialised in genre and animal painting. Influenced by the Dutch art of 17th century, his work often has a soft, warm glow enhanced by the use of soft umbers and yellow tones.
