June Harrah
(American, 20th C. )

June Harrah is perhaps best known for her 1936 series of small scale bronzes of the top dogs of the day. Asked to do the series by the dog show judge, Anton Roth, it included some fifty breeds, many of which are represented in the collections (plates tk-tk). June Harrah was born and raised in Harrah, Washington and from an early age she was encouraged to draw the animals that she loved, and in partcular, Morgan and Arab horses. She began her formal studies at fourteen, but quickly became adept at sculpting horses, dogs and other animals.

Among others, she sculpted a duck hawk for Lawrence Rockefeller, and during the same period sculpting polar bears, a donkey mare and foal and a zebra mare and foal. She also executed commissions for many prominent American collectors, including Richard S. du Pont, Paul Mellon and Ogden Phipps. She has worked in several media, including watercolor, oil, bronze and precious metals. Harrah was a founding member of the American Academy of Equine Art, based in Middleburg, Virginia and is a member of The National Sculpture Society. She has had one-man exhibitions at the Knoedler Galleries in New York City. For a time, her daughter, Lorna Pope Lord, maintained a gallery in New York City which specialized only in her mother’s work. The gallery later moved to North Salem, New York.
