Born in Glasgow, Scotland, the son of a textile designer, James Giles studied at the Aberdeen Art School. Later he traveled to Italy where he painted landscapes and studied the Old Masters. Settling in Aberdeen he started exhibiting in 1828. He became a close friend of Sir Edwin Landseer with whom he made many sketching trips. In order to paint deer, one of his favorite subject, he made himself an accomplished stalker. Occasionally painting portraits in oil, he preferred painting deer and fishing subjects. Collections: British Museums, Aberdeen Art Gallery, The National Gallery of Scotland, and the Melbourne Museum. |
