James Henry Beard
(American, 1812 -1893 )

Beard, who was born in Buffalo, NY, spent much of his life devoted to portrait painting. Some of his prominent sitters include Henry Clay and the Presidents John Q. Adams and William H. Harrison. He came to New York in 1846 where he was one of the charter members of the Century Club, and in 1872 he was elected as a full member of The National Academy of Design. In his later years he devoted himself to animal painting, and in particular, dogs.
