John Alfred Wheeler
(English, 1821 -1877 )

A resident of Bath, John Alfred Wheeler was the son of a stone cutter and was self taught painter. He was a bandsman in the army where he developed his natural talent and learned to paint horses with accuracy. Due to ill-health, he left the army in 1847 and married the same year. By 1854 he was living in Bath making a name painting racing and hunting scenes as well as horses and dogs. In 1877 he built a house called "Bath Villa' in Hanwell near the London galleries and more available to his important clients. He wrote "Handbook of Anatomy for Students of the Fine Arts" in 1838 which was illustrated with pictures of the human figure.
