George Henry Hall, American, 1825-1913 George Henry Hall was born in Manchester, New Hampshire, but soon moved to Boston where he grew up. Although he lacked formal training in art, he began to paint in 1842 at the age of 17. He travelled extensively in Europe from 1850-1852, returning to America in 1852 to settle in New York where he spent most of the rest of his life.

Hall did not specialize in paintings of dogs, but is known for his still-lifes of fruits and flowers, often rendered with a rich, jewel-like palette which is said to have ben influenced by Venetian painting which he aw on his trip to Europe. Hall continue to travel extensively, going to Spain in 1860, Italy in 1872, Egypt in 1875 and lived in Europe for several years.
