George Horlor had a distinctive painting style, characterized by a quick application of paint, to create soft, atmospheric effects. Like many of his generation, he was very influenced by Sir Edwin Landseer, the child prodigy who was to become one of Queen Victorias favorite artists, completing many commissioned portraits of her various dogs. His paintings of sporting scenes and landscapes in which animals predominated in a soft, detailed style. Horlor was popular during his lifetime, exhibiting 19 paintings at Londons prestigious Royal Academy, as well as exhibiting at the British Institution and at the Suffolk Street Galleries between 1849 and 1891. He worked at Cheltenham, Birmingham, and Brentford. |
