Rogers was born in Cambridge, MA, in 1854. He studied with J. Foxcroft Cole (qv) in 1874. He specialized in canine portraiture, most often gun dogs, although he painted other animals as well; examples include his Setter Portrait dated 1877, Pug Puppies dated 1888, Pug Puppies with Frog dated 1889, and numerous undated portraits of setters in the field, setter puppies, head and shoulder compositions of a hound and of a collie, and a kitten on a chair. He also painted genre scenes, such as Chicks in a Straw Hat, landscapes, and table-top still lifes. Rogers showed several works at the Boston (MA) Art Club, among them Dog, Spaniel in 1876, A Point in 1882, Quail Country in 1901, and A Tabby Cat in 1905. The Whistler House Museum of Art in Lowell, MA, has a portrait of two gun dogs in their permanent collection. The Smithsonian American Art Museum's Inventory of American Paintings lists his Lynn Marshes from circa 1880 -1890. |
