Edward R. Breach was a London painter of sporting scenes, animals, genre and landscape. He was best known, however, for his paintings of sporting dogs. Like his contemporary, John Emms, who specialized in depictions of Foxhounds, he painted with a strong brush stroke, and often on a large scale. Breach's palette, however, was softer, and his depictions of canine facial expression, particularly sympathetic.

Breach was successful during his lifetime, exhibiting primarily in London. He showed A Brace, and Steady at Point at the Royal Academy in 1875. He also exhibited at the Society of British Artists, Suffolk Street. The Society had been founded in 1824 as an alternative to The Royal Academy, and became The Royal Society of British Artists in 1887. Some of the paintings exhibited at the Society include Highland Cattle - The Coming Storm, in 1875, and The Twelfth of August - on the Moors in 1878.
