Douglas, who studied at the Royal Academy Schools, was an animal artist in the tradition of Sir Edwin Landseer. A painter of both horses and dogs, his animals have soft, sympathetic expressions and often lustrous coats. He exhibited forty-three paintings at the Royal Academy between 1869 and 1900.
