Born in Leeds, Schwanfelder worked primarily in Yorkshire county and visited London only occasionally. His artistic range was wide, including portraits, animals, sporting scenes, and landscape -- the last of excellent quality whether by itself or as a setting to his well-executed figures. Although he exhibited more in Yorkshire than London, his talents were appreciated in London and he was appointed Animal Painter to the Prince Regent in 1816 and re-appointed in 1821 when the Regent became King. Shaw Sparrow saw him as a link between the age of Stubbs and the Landseer-Herring era which benefitted from his influence. The quality of his work puts him high in the ranks of provincial animal painters of his period. He exhibited 10 works at the Royal Academy; from 1809 to 1835. |
