A genre and animal painter, Herrmann-Leon was a pupil of the French animal painter, Philippe Rousseau and debuted at the Paris Salon in 1861. Known primarily for his paintings of French hounds, he was awarded third and second class medallions for the works that he exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1873 and 1879, and in 1900 he was awarded a silver medal at the Exposition Universelle. The artists work is represented in various European museums, including a portrait of French hounds at the Amiens Museum, a portrait of a wolf at the fine arts museum in Le Havre and a painting of Saint Hubert at the Museum in Périgueuex, France. He was decorated with the Legion of Honour in 1897. |
