Original works of art

Briton Riviere R.A., R.E.
(English, 19th C. )

Riviere received his artistic training at Cheltenham College under J. Pettie and W. Orchardson. The majority of his work is of historical or genre subject matter, but he often introduced animals into his scenes. Riviere's depictions of single dogs are rare (most were somewhat anecdotal in nature), his reputation being established by the many prints which were taken from them.

Riviere was popular during his lifetime and exhibited some 134 works at the Royal Academy between 1858 and 1920. He also exhibited at the Suffolk Street, the Fine Art Society, and regularly showed at the Paris Salon winning medals in 1878 and 1889.
