Born in East Prussia, Arthur Waagen pursued his career as a sculptor in Paris where he set up his studio at 40, Cours-de-Vincennes. He was renowned for his fine and realistic modeling, and produced a series of groups with a North African flavour, exhibiting at the Salon from 1869 to 1887.
His most famous work is the large hunt group of a North African horseman with his dogs and prey Kabyle au Retour de la Chasse. A model of Shepherds and their Dog with a Dead Mountain-Lion is in Sheffield Museum. He also created several smaller groups of Greyhounds, one playing with a Persian Cat and an another playing with a King Charles Spaniel. |
